Using cloud based applications seems obvious these days but i am still very uncomfortable about how data will be handled in this context. For example, how do you guarantee portability, especially if you want to migrate to another provider? Can you easily migrate 1 or 2 TB of data with the current infrastructure ? What happens if your provided is acquired by a competitor or goes out of business?...thoughts welcome !

Most cloud application providers provide information about how they handle this in their contract. Att the very least, you should be able to get all of the data you stored on the provider's systems in an industry-standard, downloadable format. Sometimes they will also provide log files, audit trails, etc. too.If a service provider doesn't spell this out--look for a different one!

This very much comes down to understanding a number of points ;* what data of yours will be stored with the cloud provider* will it become the only up to date reference copy (ie the master) or is it transient data such as email traffic being filtered* What format they store it in* where they store it* if you want it back at some point what format, what timing and what is the process for this and is there a charge?* how is this relfected in your contractual service agreement ?
