Is it safe to put my employee information and records in the cloud ?

We are looking at a new HR system which combines both applicant tracking and employee management . Most of the solutions we have identified are online, in the cloud and i am wondering how safe it is to put up all this personal information.

As a business owner do we have any liability towards our employees if this data is compromised ? What are the security standards in this space, especially for employee records ?

Whilst security remains the leading surveyed concern of using the cloud, often a cloud vendor can in fact provide greater security to you than your in house application. If you look at many of the recent data leaks publicised they are for in house application leaks. A good cloud provider will need to have strong and diligent as well as consistent security expertise and procedures to operate in their space and often this will outweigh that which you could build and employ yourself. Cloud Security is a big deal. That is the very reason that most high quality cloud providers have better security than most banks today.

Take for example Salesforce.com CRM and the Force.com platform. They are full compliant and transparent about security and uptime. You can check it out at www.trust.salesforce.com and see the many Security and Compliance details they provide including safe harbor and uptime.

Vana Workforce built a complete integrated global cloud HCM on the Force.com platform for the SMB for this very reason. You can find more information on GetApp.com http://www.getapp.com/vana-workforce-...

In a nutshell. It is completely safe to load employee data, just get the security details and confidentiality agreements in place first.
